Palmetto Dunes is a 2000 acre resort located in the center of Hilton Head Island.  The white sand beach along the Atlantic Ocean is the number one reason people choose to live and vacation here.  Palmetto Dunes Plantation offers spectacular oceanfront homes along with villas and condos with ocean, fairway or lagoon views.  Although the units are located in the middle of everything, once you enter the plantation, you’re transported to a world of natural beauty and serenity.  Ancient oaks laced with Spanish moss, wild palms, and quiet cul-de-sac streets combine to help restore and rejuvenate the spirit.  Palmetto Dunes attracts those who are looking for the privacy of a gated community, the benefits of a resort atmosphere combined with proximity to the ocean with access to a harbor.

There are miles of scenic bike and jogging paths and the incredible 11 mile lagoon system which interconnects lagoons throughout the plantation where you can kayak, canoe, or fish.

The resort offers 3 championship golf courses. Links Magazine and Golf Magazine have both rated Palmetto Dunes among the top resorts in the country.

Palmetto Dunes also offers outstanding tennis for players of any ability.  There are 25 superbly maintained courts at the heart of the center; 23 clay and 2 hard courts, including 8 lighted.

Pools are available in most villa areas and in many private homes.  Residents also have access to a Beach Club for private parties and events.  You will also find the Palmetto Dunes General Store and Alexander’s Restaurant among the shops and restaurants here.

The area also boasts 2 major oceanfront hotels, The Marriott and Hilton which provides activities all year long.

Within Palmetto Dunes via their own private security gate access, sits the lovely 460 acre oceanfront neighborhood of Leamington.  This area is a private residential ocean and villa community which does not allow short term rentals.  It does, however, have fabulous amenities such as private beach access, Championship Golf and Clubhouse, a private recreation center with heated pool and kitchen and BBQ facilities, children’s playground, a boat dock with access to the 11-mile lagoon system, and a private beach pavilion with an open-air shelter and sun deck.

Directly across from Palmetto Dunes, is Shelter Cove Harbour , one of the most beautiful attractions on the Island.  Although located on the “sunset” side of the Island and sporting an entirely different personality, Shelter Cove is considered part of Palmetto Dunes and its residents and guests have access to the beaches and other amenities Palmetto Dunes has to offer.  A bike path underneath Hwy 278 connects the communities.  The Palmetto Dunes Buggy, that runs from April – Sept will take and pick you up from the beach between 8am-9pm.

As you enter Shelter Cove Harbour, you will see the largest working sundial of its kind with Neptune towering over it.  This 15.5 acre marina, one of the island’s largest and deepest, is home to numerous watercraft up to 120 feet in length in its 170 boatslips.  Every watersport you can think of may be enjoyed here, from deep-sea and inshore fishing charters to sport crabbing, sail and power boat rentals, and sightseeing and nature cruises.

There is so much to see here such as a Mediterranean Village of shops and restaurants, rocking chairs and benches for relaxing and just enjoying the natural beauty which surrounds this special place.  The Harbour offers live family entertainment at the Gazebo along with a spectacular weekly fireworks display (May-Aug) as well as playing host to community wine and food festivals.

Surrounding the marina are villas and low-rise condominium complexes.  Many are short-term rentals but those who live here are attracted by the exquisite beauty of the setting and the sunsets and make Shelter Cove their permanent or second home.  Tennis courts, swimming pools and children’s play areas vary with each complex.

Separated by a security gate, Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort is also located within the Harbour complex.  Secluded on its own island overlooking Broad Creek, this vacation ownership resort offers a range of accommodations from cozy studios to 3-Bedroom Grand Villas all set around a Great Lodge.  The guests-only facility offers beach access through its Beach House, within Palmetto Dunes Resort which has a swimming pool, game room and children’s activities throughout the year.
