When I was in High School I went on a trip with my friends to the Poconos and tried Polar Bear Swimming. The Lowcountry doesn’t get cold enough for a polar bear plunge, but a pelican plunge? That seems to be a name better-suited to the more temperate climate here. The Friends of Hunting Island is holding its annual Pelican Plunge on New Year’s Day near the island’s lighthouse to raise money for Discover Carolina educational programs through the state park service.
This will be the fourth year of this event. Previous years profits have gone to the Discover Carolina program. They are hoping this year to raise between $3,500 and $4,500. Weather is a factor for this event, but perhaps they will get about 200 and 300 jumping in the water. Maybe 500 total supporting and watching all the crazies go in. The Pelican Plunge starts at 1 p.m. Sunday. Registration starts at noon. Bathers and their cheering sections will gather for registration at the picnic area near the lighthouse. Look forward to signature warmups; a costume parade, “Simon Sez” and Kazoo songs; as well as chimenea fires and hot beverages to welcome our swimmers out of the surf For further info please visit: www.friendsofhuntingisland.org
Based on my past experience as a Polar Bear Swimmer….it is an exhilerating way to start to the New Year!
